Jaws is a milestone in film history. This movie is the first well-known movie in long row by the director Steven Spielberg, who was by release in 1975 28 years old. Jaws is based on the 1974 published novel of the same name, which tells the story of a great white shark, terrorizing a small town.
And that’s exactly how the movie starts: Young people have a small party; two of them want to go swimming and the girl swimming in the water is the first victim of the shark. After this first shark attack the protagonist Chief Brody (Roy Schneider) want to shut down the beach but the mayor prohibits this action. Like this situation is about the first half of the film.
Maybe are the other two main characters are important to mention at this point: Firstly Quint (Robert Shaw) a Popeye-like character who makes an offer to catch the shark for 10 thousand Dollar and secondly the marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) who stands from his arrival on the side of Chief Brody.
In the second half of the movie Chief Brody, Matt Hooper and Quint enter the sea to hunt the shark. This part is full of action and I don’t want to bore you with details. But with a harpoon, yellow barrels and at least an exploding oxygen bottle succeed the at the end only two guys. Quint and his boat didn’t make it and the most passive sailor Chief Brody is in the end the hero, that’ve beaten the beast.
As you probably mentioned is the plot of Jaws pretty simple, I would describe it even as banal. In some scenes you can see, that the shark is just a doll moving its jaw. And maybe it seems like Jaws is a film you don’t have to see. But you will not mention these two points while watching. You won’t care about the plot and you will be scared by the shark and its fantastic soundtrack.
And the soundtrack by John Williams (who also created the soundtracks of Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter) is one of the most epic in film history. Often you don’t really see the shark, but you know that it is somewhere, because you here its theme. This works great, because it is an equal feeling when you go swimming, you can look down, but you don’t know what’s down there. IT COULD BE ANYTHING DOWN THERE.
